The spectre of al Qaeda returned to haunt the West yesterday after a series of coordinated suicide bombings left 29 people dead and 194 wounded in the Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.

The attacks, which specifically targeted westerners living in the kingdom, were immediately condemned by the government.

The Foreign Office has warned British citizens against all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia in the wake of the attacks.
