Ministers 'don't know' Treasury's view on the euro

Senior cabinet members, including key economic ministers, have not seen the Treasury's assessment showing that Britain is not yet ready to join the single currency, Patricia Hewitt revealed yesterday.

The trade and industry secretary told the BBC yesterday that she has not seen the Treasury's assessment.

Her admission led Chris Bryant, chairman of the Labour Movement for Europe campaign, to call for a ful Cabinet debate.

"When the Cabinet sits down to discuss the Treasury's assessment, it is right and proper that they should have had sight of its conclusions in advance of the meeting," he said.
