Hopes of end to fire dispute
An end to the nine-month fire dispute may be near after the government gave the go ahead for local government employers to table a fresh pay plan.
The deputy prime minister, John Prescott, is said to have given fire brigade chiefs permission to provide union leaders with guarantees that there will be few job losses and that any changes to crewing levels and working arrangements will be negotiated rather than imposed.
