David Blunkett is said to be confident that he can tackle the asylum crisis without further legislation despite pressure from Downing Street.

A Home Office source has said asylum numbers are beginning to turn the corner despite a record high of 100,000 in the year to February.

But the department appears to be watering down plans for "asylum hotels" in areas such as Sittingbourne.
