Baghdad's fall has given Tony Blair and Labour a big boost in the polls, according to a Populus survey for today's Times.

Overall, Labour has risen seven points since early last month to 41 per cent, while the Conservatives have fallen 5 points to 29 per cent.

Support for the Liberal Democrats fell two points to 22 per cent.

A large majority of Britons are now convinced that the war to overthrow Saddam Hussein's regime was well worth fighting, according to a YouGov poll for today's Telegraph.

However, a significant number of people view the allied victory as the beginning rather than the end of a lengthy political process.

The coalition was correct to take military action against Saddam Hussein, 60 per cent of people say, but 66 per cent remain worried about the war's consequences.
