Iraq casts shadow over Scottish poll

The Scottish parliament election campaign officially began last night but looks set to be overshadowed by the war in Iraq.

First minister Jack McConnell expressed his concern at the potential impact on voters' turnout with minds focused elsewhere and polls suggesting just 48 per cent of the electorate likely to cats their ballot.

Low participation will hit Labour hardest, the Guardian reports, with the Liberal Democrats likely to be strengthened within the coalition executive.
