The NHS is struggling to cope with severe nurse shortages, the head of the Royal College of Nursing said yesterday.

Speaking to the RCN annual conference, general secretary Dr Beverly Malone said that government pledges to increase recruits are not being met.

"The nursing shortage is not sorted, it is nowhere near sorted, ask any patient," she said.
