Tony Blair has personally asked Yasser Arafat to share power with Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian prime minister designate, in a bid to secure the peace process in the Middle East.

President Bush has promised to publish the "road map" towards a Palestinian state only after Abbas has appointed a Cabinet.
