Former Cabinet "enforcer" Jack Cunningham yesterday said he would give "serious consideration" to any offer to replace Robin Cook as leader of the Commons.

The FT suggests his chances of landing the job could be undermined if the joint committee on Lords reform, which he chairs, fails to agree on a way out of the current impasse.

The MPs and peers on the committee yesterday came to no conclusions on a draft report which he had drawn up.
