The prime minister has successfully blocked a move by the chancellor who had hoped to use tomorrow's Budget to announce the government's decision on the euro.

After fighting a rearguard action against Gordon Brown, Tony Blair has delayed the announcement until later in the year, reports the FT.

Blair is also said to be agreeing a form of words which will mean Europe does not see a British rejection as further signs of diverging interests between the UK and the EU.
