The Conservatives have claimed that the government is using a new inquiry into NHS funding as an excuse for another tax rise to cover up its economic failures.

Shadow health secretary Liam Fox said that a report in the Independent revealing that banker Derek Wanless has been asked to follow up his work showed that "the NHS is going to be the excuse that the chancellor uses in the future to tax us even more heavily".
