Hewitt prescribes tonic for chemists

The trade secretary yesterday signalled that she would side with small, high street chemists when the government reviews the regulation of the pharmacy market.

An Office for Fair Trading report in January had recommended full-scale deregulation, allowing out of town supermarkets to dominate the industry, but Patricia Hewitt told MPs that she thought this would interfere with NHS plans for the local role of pharmacists in medical care.
