Tony Blair told MPs yesterday that a breakthrough could be imminent in Northern Ireland.

Although new elections to the assembly have been delayed by a month, the prime minister insisted that difficulties could be overcome.

"I think it is possible that we have reached the basis for the final breakthrough in this, so we can resolve all the outstanding issues of the Good Friday agreement," Blair said yesterday.

The prime minister and Irish premier Bertie Ahern will return to Ulster next month.
