Editor calls for press ombudsman
Simon Kelner, the editor of the Independent, told MPs yesterday that the Press Complaints Commission should be monitored by an independent ombudsman who would be created "under the umbrella" of the new media watchdog Ofcom.
But the government has opted against statutory regulation of the press. Patricia Hewitt, the trade and industry secretary, said: "The free press will remain free."
