David Blunkett is set to back a plan which would see asylum seekers entering Britain being sent to Albania while their applications are processed.

The home secretary will unveil the plan to set up United Nations safe havens at a meeting of European justice ministers next week.

Turkey, Somalia and Morocco have previously been proposed as safe haven zones but the government is keen to use Albania because it is a major staging post for asylum seekers trying to enter the EU.
