The Liberal Democrats are preparing to spend up to £1.25 million on their campaign to oust Ken Livingstone as mayor of London.

"This is going to be a very determined campaign," said Lord Rennard, the party's head of campaigns and strategy.

"For anything less than an actual general election, this will be the biggest Liberal Democrat campaign ever with far and away the biggest budget."
