Hodge ditches class gap target

Margaret Hodge has backtracked on a pledge to set a target to get more working class students into university.

Charles Clarke, the education secretary, is reported to believe that the department already has enough targets.

Meanwhile, Clarke will today promise that two-year, employer-led courses at universities will be a "major vehicle" for expanding university education.
