The Liberal Democrats announced yesterday that Simon Hughes, currently the party's home affairs spokesman, would be its candidate for the next London mayoral election.

In a ballot of London party members, Hughes beat Susan Kramer by a margin of two to one. He pledged to continue with the congestion charging scheme introduced by Ken Livingstone.
