IDS sees the funny side
In one of the many stories featuring Iain Duncan Smith, papers focus on the Conservative leader's appearance on the Today programme yesterday.
When pressed by John Humphrys on the internal problems which have beset his party this week, Duncan Smith responded by laughing and giggling.
Humphrys said later that Duncan Smith's new communications style had taken him by surprise, adding: "It will be interesting to see if this is going to develop into a strategy."
An attempt by the Tory leader to broaden his appeal also backfired yesterday.
Speaking to a group of businessmen in Washington, which is part of Sunderland, the Tory leader began by saying: "It is a great pleasure to be here in Newcastle and a privilege to be among you."
He further alienated his audience by praising the European cup exploits of Newcastle United earlier this week.
Peter Deakin, editor of a Sunderland fanzine, said: "For someone who wants to be seen as having his finger on the pulse, Duncan Smith has scored a massive own goal."
