Ministers are to boycott the annual conference of the largest teachers' organisation.

Charles Clarke, the education secretary, said that he was not prepared to endure the jeering and heckling from left-wing activists that normally occurs during gatherings of the National Union of Teachers.

Doug McAvoy, the general secretary of the NUT, said that the move was "immature".
