Young doctors to be fast-tracked

The most capable doctors will be able to qualify as consultants while still in their 20s under plans disclosed by the government yesterday.

Instead of taking 13 years or more to complete the training, doctors will be able to reach the top in 11 years.

Ministers believe that training can be accelerated and consultant numbers increased without losing the depth of experience hospital doctors need to work safely without supervision.
