Environment minister Michael Meacher uses an interview with The Ecologist magazine today to launch a strong attack on genetically modified food.

Meacher, the minister responsible for GM food, said: "We have been feeding ourselves perfectly adequately since overcoming problems of hunger in our early existence. GM is not necessary."

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs described Meacher's comments as "his views" and indicated there was "creative tension" within the government on the issue.
