Tony Blair said yesterday that university admissions should be awarded on merit and not on the basis of class.

Speaking in the Commons, the prime minister said: "People should go to university based on their merit whatever their class background."

Damian Green, the shadow education secretary, accused Blair of making "hollow promises" and pledged that the Conservatives would abolish the government's proposed "admissions tsar".
