Chancellor defends tax rise plans

Gordon Brown has insisted that he will not be deflected from his plans to put up taxes in April to pay for extra spending on the NHS.

"I'm never one to be complacent. You know that I would always be vigilant - and I do understand the problems of people with their pensions and savings at the moment," he told the BBC.
