Congestion fines to hit £1.5m a week

Fines for non-payment of the congestion charge look set to generate at least £1.5 million a week, more than twice the amount expected by Ken Livingstone.

Transport for London said yesterday that the number of penalty notices being issued averaged 7000 a day compared with their anticipated level of about 3000.

Livingstone revealed yesterday that the £5 charge will not be increased for at least 10 years.
