Scottish first minister Jack McConnell has called for an "honest" election campaign to rebuild relations with a sceptical electorate.

McConnell, who is recovering from having three stitches in his head after falling on ice, said a series of disasters such as the resignation of Henry McLeish and the death of Donald Dewar had hit public confidence in politics.
