The Home Office yesterday introduced new rules restricting the rights of refugees to the benefits system.

People arriving in Britain will have to claim asylum immediately or face losing state support. Immigration minister Beverly Hughes said the rules were "fair and simple".

But refugee groups said the measures would leave to "hunger and homelessness".
