Customs case collapses costing £100m

The taxpayer is facing a bill of £100 million after blunders by Customs and Excise led to the Court of Appeal clearing seven convicted fraudsters.

Lord Justice Longmore commented: "This is a very melancholy result. The court is compelled to allow appeals even in the case of one appellant who has pleaded guilty."
