Electronic voting moved a step closer yesterday with the announcement of expanded "e-voting" trials for May's local elections.

The Electoral Commission gave the go ahead for as many as 1.5 million people to take part in the scheme in 18 local authorities

The internet, text messaging and, for the first time, digital television will be used to conduct the ballots.
