MPs divided by Lords reforms
MPs were yesterday unable to agree on what proportion of the House of Lords should be elected, appointed or hereditary.
Both Houses will vote on a range of seven options for change early next month.
Robin Cook, leader of the House of Commons, said the government did not have a preferred option for reform but added that he wanted a conclusion during this parliament.
"If the current attempt at reform is to succeed, it will be essential that all those who want reform show flexibility in supporting whatever option can command the greatest support as the centre of gravity," he said.
Cook is also calling for a smaller House of Lords than recommended by the joint committee of MPs and peers.
