Figures released by the CBI paint a gloomy economic picture for the start of 2003.

A survey by the organisation found pre-Christmas sales had dropped for the first time in a decade as consumer spending waned. This was coupled with signs that the housing market may be about to tail off and the manufacturing sector is again in recession.
