Retiring consultants slow NHS reform
Government plans to increase the number of doctors in hospitals have been hit by a surge in the number of consultants taking retirement.
The 23 per cent rise in retirements has wiped out gains made by the Department of Health's international recruitment campaign, with twice the number of senior doctors taking early retirement in 2001 than 2000.
