Israeli premier Ariel Sharon yesterday refused to lift a ban on Palestinian representatives travelling to the British government's conference on the Middle East.

Writing in the FT today, one of the banned delegates, Saeb Erekat, says it "must rank high in the list of the world's pettiest political gestures".
