Blair to back unelected Lords

MPs and peers will today debate the final stage of Lords reform.

Tony Blair, the Times reports, is set to declare his support for an unelected upper house after February 4 - when MPs and peers vote on reform proposals.

The prime minister is said to be opposed to a "hybrid" Lords composed of elected and selected peers.

His view is at odds with the majority of MPs who are set to speak out for a largely elected second chamber as the House of Commons holds a one-day debate today.
