England's cricket team moved onto the political stage yesterday with a plea for its controversial World Cup game in Zimbabwe to be moved to South Africa.

Having kept its counsel in the debate until now, the team issued a statement through its union saying it was "greatly concerned about the moral, political and safety issues that the fixture in Zimbabwe has raised".
