The Liberal Democrats yesterday warned that a legal move to allow constituencies to choose candidates from all-women shortlists would not work.

Senior peer Lord Lester said the approach was "crude and unequal" and questioned why all-black or all-Asian shortlists weren't being permitted on the same basis.
