Wanted: One heriditary peer
A vacancy for one hereditary peer to join the House of Lords attracted over 100 applicants yesterday.
The "by-election" is being held because one of the 92 hereditary peers allowed to stay on in 1999 has died.
Robin Cook, the leader of the house, described the situation as eccentric and said that it showed the need for further reform.
