David Blunkett will be working part time until the new year after undergoing stomach surgery at the weekend.

The home secretary will spend the Christmas break recovering after an operation in an NHS hospital in Yorkshire to cure what officials said was a "long-standing problem relating to his oesophagus and stomach".

"The surgery was preventative and he has been given a clean bill of health for the future," a statement said.
