The FT today analyses the relationship between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

It points out that the Downing Street's claim yesterday that the relationship between the prime minister and the chancellor "has been, and remains, one of the great strengths of this government", was greeted with laughter by the assembled journalists.

Writing in today's Daily Mail, Peter Obourne describes the relationship problems as "the end of the affair", and says it is now a question of when, rather than if, Tony Blair sacks Gordon Brown.

The Sun's political editor, Trevor Kavanagh, says that Blair will be the winner in any battle between himself and Gordon Brown.

Kavanagh writes: "Mr Brown's best chance of becoming the next prime minister will come if he supports the present one."
