Fear over consumer debt levels

Concerns for the economy have grown after data released by the Institute for Fiscal Studies revealed that households with low incomes have similar debt levels to middle earners.

The news that household debt is running at 111 per cent of disposable income has sparked fresh fears of a slump in consumer spending should the economy slow further.
