Greg Dyke, the director general of the BBC, has been accused of being over confident and lacking "emotional intelligence" by a Labour peer close to Number 10.

Lord Lipsey, who is tipped as a board member of the new media watchdog, Ofcom, said that Dyke's instincts are "to colonise, to compete and destroy".
