London launches not-so-smart card
A £1.2 billion project to introduce smart card technology to London's transport system will not be compatible with a similar system being planned for the rail network.
The capital's system, launched on a trial basis yesterday, is thought to be less sophisticated than that being planned by rail companies, with the result that the government may be forced to spend millions of pounds on upgrading the technology at a later date.
