The number of trainee teachers is at its highest for more than 10 years, according to the government's teacher training agency.

More than 31,000 trainees will begin their studies for the teaching profession during this year - 2,000 more than last year.

David Miliband, the schools standards minister, said the figures represented "real progress" in the government's drive to deal with teacher shortages.
