Ministers are to produce their own monthly index of house prices, it has been revealed.

A Whitehall source told today's Telegraph: "The figures being put out by the building societies are often wildly divergent.

"Because the media tend to focus on the one showing highest rises, this tends to fan the flames of the boom. That is the problem."
