Labour missing performance targets

Three quarters of Gordon Brown's performance targets for schools and hospitals have not been met, reports today's Times.

The government has admitted that 30 of the 130 public service agreements (PSAs) it set in 2000 have not been adhered to.

According to a study of nearly 600 PSAs, nearly 40 per cent of those set in 1998 have failed or are near failure and 75 per cent of targets set in 2000 are in a similar position.

Michael Howard, the shadow chancellor, is reported to be putting the missed targets at the centre of his attack on the Queen's Speech in the Commons later today.
