Ministers have called for a public debate on national missile defence.

Defence secretary Geoff Hoon told the Commons yesterday that he has ordered detailed analysis of the implications of missile defence.

He said that the government would "welcome parliamentary and public discussion of the issues involved".

Hoon's intervention was seen as the clearest signal yet that the government is set to back the US missile defence system.
