The GMB, one of Britain's biggest unions, has called off plans to hold a strike ballot involving thousands of local government workers employed by private companies.

John Edmonds, the union's general secretary, said: "The prime minister has made a commitment to work with us on the two tier workforce. We will take the government on its word."
