Patients lose out to league tables

Some high risk heart patients are being denied treatment in NHS hospitals because of the effect their death would have on performance league tables.

A senior source at the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons is quoted in today's Telegraph saying: "Faced with the impending publication of results, surgeons are increasingly looking to self preservation when faced with very risky cases."
