Iain Duncan Smith has angered modernisers in his shadow cabinet by warning that Tory frontbenchers should either vote against plans to permit gay adoptions or stay away from the division altogether.

The announcement comes as the Tory leadership hopes to deal a fatal blow to the legislation following its defeat in the House of Lords.
