The Northern Ireland secretary has called on republicans to finally ditch the gun for the ballot box.

In his address to the Labour Party conference, John Reid said nationalists had been given new rights as democratic equals and ought to behave as such.

He argued: "The people of Northern Ireland are asking you now to have the courage of your democratic convictions.

"You have to complete your journey from violence to democracy."
